Paulie Gatto's Death Scene

While I was watching The Godfather again, in order to expand my knowledge about the movie and review scenes that I did not understand, I found parts in the movie that I did not noticed them first time I was watching it in the class. One of the scenes that particularly drew my attention was the scene that Peter Clemenza is going with his right hand man, Pauline Gatto, as well as Rocco Lampone to mattresses. Although it seemed they are going to mettresses, they were going to kill Paulie. As Pauline who was also Godfather’s chauffeur got sick and did not show up for guarding Don Vito Corleone, Suntino Carleone doubt that Paulie Gatoo was guilty on the Godfather’s assassination. Therefore, He ordered for his death by Peter Clemenza and Rocco Lampone. While driving their car passed two flags: United States and Red Cross. As they arrived, Clemenza told Paulie to stop the car so he can “take a leak”. Then, he gets off the car and turned his back to the statue of liberty which is far from them, but the audience still can see it .Cappola is depicting how these mafia groups overtake all the human values to kill someone. What I also found unique in this scene is the way that Clemenza behaved. After they murdered Paulie , Clemenza took the cannoli box that he bought for his wife and calmly blew the car. Without any unnatural attitude.

Colon

Colon is one of the punctuations mostly used when the author wants to inform the reader that what comes next is directly related to the previous sentence. That is why colon is also called “the mark of expectation or addition”.

The most important thing to remember is that colons are only required after a complete sentence. For instance it is correct to say the first scene of the movie Godfather has two settings: the interior of Don Vito Corleone’s office and Connie Corleonie’s weeding reception outside of the house or in the movie Godfather by Francis Ford Cappola, director portrays characters through the usage of the following: costume, and color. Colon is appropriate in these sentences since, my statements are complete sentences. Most of the time if we can replace the colon with the word namely, then the colon is the right choice.

Another thing to remember while using colon is that only use one space after the colon. Capitalization is not necessary after the colon. Therefore, it is a style choice and it depends on the write.

Juxtaposition

Another element that draws my attention in The Godfather is juxtaposition. Director used it frequently as an element to provide a strong plot and illuminate the massage. Juxtaposition is also used to place two descriptions or situations by one another, in order to present a comparison and contrast. An example is the scene that Michael Corleone is walking with Appollina Vitteli in Sicily and behind them walking group of ladies with black dress and following them are Michael’s two bodyguards (Calo and Fabrizio). Immediately after this scene Francis Ford Cappola, portrays the same condition with Michael’s older brother, Sunny Carleone. He departs from a dark building of Lucy Manchini’s apartment in New York and behind him are his bodyguards. Juxtaposition is used to depict how these two brothers (Michael and Sunny) are different. Michael has bound character that is committed to family, unlike sunny, who has a rambunctious behavior. The effect of this literary feature on the audiences mind is creating this question that who is a better Don? Does the oldest son of the Godfather with a rash personality or the youngest son of Don Carleone, who is new to the business and has no experience, deserve it?

Class Act: Those Winter Sundays

One of the discussions we had during class was how different pieces of literature relate to the movie The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola. This helped us get a better understanding of Godfather and also notice how diverse pieces of literature could resemblance to each other although, they have different themes. Therefore, we studied a poem called Those Winters Sundays by Robert Hayden. In this particular poem, the poet recounts that in a Sunday mornings, his old father gets up in cold and builds fire for his son, so that he could get up in worm house .However, he does not appreciate his father’s love .The poem portrays distant relationship of a father and a son. Clearly, anyone who watched first scene of The Godfather would also detect the weak relationship of Michael Corleone and his father Don Vito Corleone (The head of Chorleone’s family) . Michel separated himself from his family when he was talking to his girlfriend, kay by saying “That's my family Kay, that's not me”. But in contrary, Vitto Corleone does not take a family picture in Conny’s wedding until Michael arrives, which shows how much he cares for Michael.

Michael Carleone

There are numerous characters that affect each other and perspective of viewer in the movie Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola. One of these characters is Michael Corleone, youngest son of Don vito Corleone who presented to viewer in Conny’s wedding. He is a distinguished war hero that has a completely different attitude, belief and personality than other members of Corleone family, specially his other two brothers Sonny and Fredo. As the movie began Michael’s character develops and by the end of movie observer would fully feel the change in his behavior. At the begging Coppola portrays Michael as calm and weak character by showing his delay on his sister’s wedding or choosing an outsider as his girlfriend. He also illustrates Michael as a character who does not have desire to participate in family’s business. “Luca Brasi held a gun to his head, and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract. That's a true story. That's my family Kay, that's not me”. Clearly, the dialogue indicates Michael is different from his family and he rejects what they are doing. However, as the movie goes on not only Michael gets involve in his family’s business, he also becomes an effective part of it. Initiation of this change is when the youngest child of the family went to visit his father in the hospital and feels his father is in risk of being killed. Therefore, he changes Godfather’s room and assures him that “I’m with you pop”. This is a clear example of a dynamic character that entirely changes by the end of story.

Literature Feature Hunt: Setting

Setting includes the location, lighting and time in which a story takes place and initiates the main backdrop and mood for a story. Setting can have great importance in establishing not only physical background, but also mood or emotional intensity. They are strong complicated settings in the movie Godfather directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola portrays how power could bring corruption through the usage of setting.

Every time the viewer watches a scene of Don Corleone's office the room is dark and everywhere is silent, but immediately when the viewer drawn to the next scene, the scene gets bright with lots of noise. An obvious example is the begging of the movie. Movie starts in a dark room and the viewer cannot see the angles of the room. Godfather leaned on his chair which is the symbol of power and is listening to Bonasera’s request .There is absolute silence, but right after godfather orders for justice viewer hears loud noises of Conny’s wedding. The setting is representing the ambiguity and mysterious environment of the room and the affect of it on Don Corleone's personality. The same person who ordered killing ruthlessly on his office turns to a kind father who celebrates his daughter’s wedding.
